FUJIMOTO Yoshimichi
《Vase with Colored Glazes, Overglaze Enamels,
Gold and Silver on Sohaku Glaze, Depicting Moths in Flames》1991
*Works may be subject to change
Fujimoto Yoshimichi(1919-1992)was appointed as a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property in the field of porcelain with overglaze enamels. He explored ways of expression using porcelain with overglaze enamels, which established an individual style distinct from Japan’s local production area of ceramic ware. Through experimenting with techniques using pigments and glazes, he created realistically depicted artworks that brought out depth.
The artworks of Fujimoto Yoshimichi, in both the quality and the quantity of works, hold an important place in the Kikuchi Collection. Kikuchi Tomo, the founder of Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum, opened a contemporary ceramic gallery in 1974 named Kandori, and for the first commemorative solo exhibition, had invited Fujimoto to present his works. Since then, Kikuchi Tomo collected over 130 of his works. At Tomo Museum, this Fujimoto exhibition will be the fifth time, and we hope to present the trajectory of his works.

Kikuchi Biennale is a ceramic competition, held once every two years since 2004, at Kikuchi Kanjitsu Memorial Tomo Museum. For over 20 years, Tomo Museum has been dedicated to promoting contemporary ceramics from the capital city of Japan, Tokyo, and organizing this ceramic competition has been a significant part of this mission.
This will be our 11th Kikuchi Biennale, where works submitted for the competition (deadline on June 30th, 2025) will go through two examination stages of images and physical, before being selected as 1 of roughly 50 artworks (including the 5 prizewinners) exhibited in the Biennale exhibition. In Kikuchi Biennale, we accept ceramic artworks worldwide, regardless of the content of works or the qualifications of the participants, in order to observe the present state and the possibilities of ceramic artworks.
